I know social media gets the bad rep most times, it can be all those things but mostly depends on how you use it. There are bullies online, they are everywhere. Hiding online is just more of a comfortable place for them. With all the bad rep social media is known for, it has its good side also. There are things I had no idea I liked until I used social media more or maybe I never liked them but social media made me aware of them and I fell in love.
Potted Plants: Growing up, plants were something that were ‘serious’ and the most I saw were fake plants/flowers at most. It never occurred to me that people had plants in their house and not just outside the ‘gate’, when I discovered this, it was a big deal to me. Following certain people especially Kristin Johns on YouTube made me more aware of the beauty and the benefits of having plants around. I am yet to be a plant parent yet but it is something I am so looking forward to.
Travel: I have always been aware of ‘traveling’ as a concept but never understood or felt the joy and beauty in traveling. Discovering travel bloggers and travel blogs, gave me enormous amount of exposure. I spend time reading travel blogs, watching vlogs and just living vicariously through people who enjoy traveling with the hope that one day, I will too. Exposure is also something I enjoy about social media. I know this is tricky because what we see online are highlight reels but I have been able to learn things and be exposed through social media.
White spaces: I always felt white was problematic but do you know that white is beautiful? Honestly, for the longest time of my life, it never occurred to me that white spaces were actually a thing. When I started falling in love with white spaces and decor, it started on Pinterest. I was captivated, seeing various beautiful white rooms, decor, flatlays and various white spaces instantly stole my heart. This love is tugged somewhere deep in my heart.
Framed words: I grew up in a photographic environment, I have been seeing pictures and frames all my life but discovering framed words and it’s beauty just set it apart on another level. I have written few bible verses and words that I hope to frame pretty soon.
Books: This is complicated. I have always enjoyed reading. My grandpa teases me that growing up, all I wanted to do was read newspapers. My zest for reading now compared to two years ago is totally different. When I joined a Reading Challenge on Instagram where I had to post the book I read weekly, it planted a seed in me. I did not just want to post the book randomly, I remembered that I had seen some book pictures* which I later discovered were flat lays previously on Pinterest and coincidentally discovered some Nigerian bookstagramers, I was hooked. There was no going back from there.
Social media is a blessing and a curse. People make it on social media, people get consumed on social media. You have to make that decision. Are there things social media has made you love?
