”We’ve all started to put down the virtues of the other factions in the process of bolstering our own , I don’t want to do that. I want to be brave, and selfless, and smart, and kind, and honest”

After my last post here some people actually reached out concerning  books. Thank you, Titi. I was feeling bad that I hadn’t read in a while so on my way to school I got a second hand book; Divergent by Veronica Roth for₦600. *Such a steal*

I can hear someone say “Oh!You are just reading that?” well, yeah. I am just reading it. I saw the movie so it was not totally strange for me. There were others books there mostly non-African. I just trusted divergent more.

I kinda felt this review was unnecessary but at the second thought it is actually important. Majority of the world feels book being made into movies are always better than the movie. Do I agree with this? Yes. Yes. Yes.  Stay with me to know why.

Business of the day

Beatrice ‘Tris’ Prior lets us in her world. Her society isbuilt into different factions; Abnegation(the selfless), Dauntless(brave and protector),  Amity(the kind), Erudite (Knowledge seekers), and Candor (truth seekers). Beatrice is born in the selfless faction but she feels out of place and there is a solution. She is sixteen and during the choosing ceremony she is allowed to pick whichever faction she prefers but that was after an aptitude test.

The aptitude test is the beginning of her journey. She doesn’t fit into any in particular, she is divergent. Beatrice picked dauntless; this is when her life really started.

The gentle girl embraces the dauntless life; jumping off moving train, having tattoos, wearing her hair in a different style. She doesn’t become a Dauntless automatically. First, she had to qualify for different rigorous training, test and survive with people like Peter and Eric lurking around.

Her divergence nature brought her closer to love. Also putting her in trouble, it is a good thing and a bad thing but the goodness clouds the bad side.

Erudites are tired of Abnegation ruling the faction so they scheme with Dauntless to take over. That means one thing; Things will never remain the same.

There is a war in society, dauntless has been compromised.  Tris realizes that she is no longer just a member of one faction but she is an important person to the society.  Tris and four have to work towards their survival but will it consume them?

My opinion

*I just took a deep breath* *another one*

I think I am going to start by saying that in every story whether real or made up there is a version of us

‘To my mother, who gave me the moment when Beatrice realizes how strong her mother is and wonders how she missed it for so long’.

I would be over flogging the matter if I say Veronica Roth is a brilliant author. Her book was made into a movie. That means something! Her ability to imagine and create a beautiful book is appreciated especially by me.

Reading this book made me realize that I did not really understand the movie. I only knew that the movie was interesting but there was no depth.  The movie helped because if I hadn’t seen it I would have a bleak mental picture of what happened during the simulation.

There were parts I just skimmed through especially what happened during the simulation. It was an integral part of the book but it just wasn’t engaging to me. I also felt Amity faction was also neglected in the book.

Books over movies any day. I understand that it is not every part of the book that can be portrayed in the movies. Tris’ thoughts couldn’t be known every time like when she realized that Al was part of her attacker because she smelt his soap; lemongrass and sage.  We didn’t even know Al actually liked Tris or that Eric called Al’s suicide bravery it is not germane to the storyline but it’s you get for reading the book. In the movie, we didn’t get to know that Peter stabbed Edward in his eye. Did we even get to know Edward? Movies just get straight to the point. Books are better. I repeat.

When I read a book there are people that makes me keep reading; Tris and Four. I really don’t care if Erudites rule but Tris and Four just have to be together.  When I saw allegiant (movie) and realized that Tris and four’s story was not really developed, I was disappointed. I was also shocked when I realized that Four was 18 in the book. He didn’t appear so in the movie. I don’t think it matters anyway because it’s another world.

“I have no home, no path, and no certainty. I am no longer Tris, the selfless, or Tris the brave. I suppose that now, I must become more than neither”

I enjoyed the book. Thank you, Veronica Roth.

My favourite line in the book was the beginning of the acknowledgement when she wrote:

“Thank you, God, for your son and for blessing me beyond comprehension”
